Quilts and Quilt Appraisal
Quilt Appraisals by Julia Fikse
Julia Fikse, also known as The Quilt Ninja, is an AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser in Southern California. She provides written, in-person quilt appraisals in Los Angeles County, Ventura County, the San Gabriel Valley, and beyond.
A formal quilt appraisal is a written document. It includes the value of your quilt and Julia Fikse’s seal as an AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser. The quilt must be examined in person. A photo cannot be used for a formal appraisal.
The Value of a Quilt Appraisal
Knowing the value of an antique quilt is important. People get a quilt appraisal for many reasons.
You may want documentation for insurance replacement after a flood, fire, theft, loss or damage in shipment, or another disaster. You may want the fair market value for a donation. You may want to sell the quilt. Or you may be giving it as a gift and want the recipient to know its value.
Whatever the reason, an appraisal is a wise choice. Every year, quilts of widely different values are lost, stolen, or damaged with no documentation.
How a Quilt Appraisal Starts
To begin, once you contact Julia, she will request you send a photo of your quilt. Julia reviews the photo and your needs. She then decides whether a formal appraisal or a further conversation is the better next step.
Quilt Appraisal Fees
Each quilt is a separate piece of art. Each formal appraisal is its own document, with its own fee. If you have a collection, contact Julia about the process for appraising it.

Common Questions
Who is a quilt appraiser in Los Angeles County?
Julia Fikse, Quilt Ninja, is an AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser in Southern California.
Can you appraise my quilt from a photo?
No. A photo is only the first step. A formal appraisal is a written document prepared after the quilt is examined in person. It states the value and carries her seal as an AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser.
Why do people get quilts appraised?
For insurance replacement in the event of a flood, fire, theft, shipping loss, or other damage. For a fair market value before a donation or a sale. And before giving a quilt as a gift, so the recipient knows its value, for example.
Does each quilt have its own fee?
Yes. Each quilt is a different piece of art, so each appraisal is a separate document with a separate fee. For a collection, ask Julia about the process.
What if I do not need a formal appraisal?
Julia offers quilt consultations by video and in person. Use the contact form to ask about pricing.
